About
CELEBRATE THE CHANGE OF SEASONS BY PRACTICING 108 SUN SALUTATIONS Surya Namaskar, also known as Sun Salutations, is a series of 12 yoga postures that energize the solar plexus region. The solar plexus is an important centre in the body and is connected to many energy channels and body organs. Practicing Sun Salutations is widely known throughout the world, and anyone who has embraced yoga is familiar with this practice and its numerous benefits. Traditionally, 108 Sun Salutations are practiced during the change of seasons, on winter and summer solstice, and on spring and autumn equinox. During the equinox, the day and night are equal lengths. The Autumnal Equinox is a time to get grounded and go within before winter comes. The reasoning behind 108 Sun Salutations is a belief that the fire we build up in the solar plexus during this practice is cleansing and detoxifying, which allows us to get in touch with ourselves. As we move and create the internal heat in the body we activate the Prana (life force), which in turn moves the blocked energy and emotions. Quite symbolic for a new season: as the trees drop their leaves, we drop our old energy and everything that no longer serves us to prepare for a period of calmness and quietness, to reset, recharge and be prepared for a new beginning.
